When we talk about violence, we most often focus on safety, legal steps and leaving the relationship. But what is mentioned less often are the health consequences — those that remain even after the violence stops.
Violence is not only a blow. Psychological, emotional, economic and sexual violence leave equally deep traces. Long-term exposure to fear and humiliation damages health in ways that can last for years.
Health, safety and dignity are not privileges — they are basic rights.
Physical wounds are not only bruises and fractures. A body under stress can develop hypertension, heart problems, chronic pain and hormonal imbalance. Sexual violence brings additional risks: unwanted pregnancies, infections, gynaecological complications — and traumas that do not disappear with the event itself.
Psychological consequences are equally serious: anxiety, depression, insomnia, panic attacks and loss of self-confidence. Post-traumatic stress disorder is not rare. These are not “weaknesses”, but a normal reaction to abnormal circumstances.
Children in a violent environment carry their own wounds, even when they are not direct victims. Emotional and developmental difficulties can be transmitted across generations.
The greatest problem is silence. Fear, shame and economic dependence — all of this prevents women from seeking help. That is why the reaction of the surroundings is crucial. Instead of asking “why didn’t she leave?”, the right question is: “how can I help?”
Timely support — from psychologists, doctors, centres for social work and projects such as OSNAŽI — can make the difference between recovery and years of prolonged suffering.
The OSNAŽI project gives women space for recovery: conversation, education, psychosocial support and empowerment. It is not a service, but the first step toward restoring dignity and control over one’s own life.
No woman should endure violence. Health, safety and dignity are not privileges — they are basic rights.
The “OSNAŽI” project is implemented with the support of the Secretariat for Social Protection of the City of Belgrade.
