A woman experiencing violence rarely asks for help immediately. Fear, shame, guilt and prolonged manipulation make this extremely difficult, even when those closest to her are within reach. This is precisely why family and friends have far more influence than they often realise.
Violence is rarely visible from the outside. It is important to notice changes: withdrawing from others, a sudden loss of confidence, constant worry, making excuses for a partner’s behaviour, isolation, or control over her phone or finances. The signs are there; they only need to be recognised.
When a woman speaks, or even hints that something is wrong, the response of those around her is crucial. Phrases such as “Surely it is not really like that” or “Every marriage has problems” do not help. They deepen her sense of isolation and discourage her from seeking support again.
Support does not mean making decisions for her. It means creating a safe space where she can speak without fear of judgement. Listen. Believe her. Make it clear that the violence is never her fault.
The question “Why don’t you just leave?” often does more harm than good. Leaving is not a simple act, and that moment is especially dangerous. Instead of pressure, she needs carefully considered support in planning safe steps, without haste and without judgement.
Practical help is equally important: temporary accommodation, childcare, accompanying her to institutions, keeping documents safe, or being available when she needs someone. Sometimes it is enough simply to know that she is not alone.
Violence is not a private family matter. Silence protects no one; it only prolongs suffering. A timely response can prevent serious consequences.
When a woman feels that she has someone she can trust, it becomes easier to find the strength to seek professional support. Understanding and presence are often worth more than grand words.
The “OSNAŽI” project works precisely to strengthen this support network through psychosocial support, education and the empowerment of women. The goal is the long-term restoration of dignity, safety and confidence in one’s own strength.
No woman should have to go through violence alone. Sometimes one outstretched hand is enough to begin the path towards freedom.
Pay attention. If you notice signs of violence around you, do not remain silent. Your response may be crucial; perhaps you can become the hand that saves someone.
The “OSNAŽI” project is implemented with the support of the Secretariat for Social Protection of the City of Belgrade.
